Monochrome Fine Art Photography

If you are a fan of minimalism and plan to reflect the concept onto your wedding photography, you might want to consider a monochrome series of wedding photographs. A professional photographer will be able to skillfully inject life and emotion into a monochrome frame. It is letting the eyes and soul, instead of the colors, of the subject to tell the stories.

Adeptly using different amount of light for each angle to produce artistic effect will amplify the aesthetic of the overall image, making it very personal and intimate. For years to come, the series of photographs will exert different effects and sentiments based on the viewer’s emotions.

A black & white photo is a monochrome photo, but a monochrome photo is not necessarily a black & white photo. A black & white photograph only consists of shades of grey. Award-winning photographer, Mr. Oliver Xin Liang, who is often recognized for his black & white and limelight photos, expressed: “While light is the best prop given by the nature to photographers, producing an image in a dim environment while maximizing the light’s potential to highlight the essence of the subject is the best way to show our appreciation for the light.”

A very similar concept to monochrome and black & white photography is another photography style called limelight photography. “Limelight” used to be a stage lighting that focuses intense illumination at a spot through a cylinder. In photography, it means using light to shine on the subject and bring focus onto it. Although this photo style does not only present one shade of color in the frame, but just like monochrome photos, limelight photos can also provide a striking and timeless quality, which is quite perfect for wedding portraits.

Principle Wedding Planner, Ms. Evan Chee shares her thoughts on this topic, “I have always loved black & white photographs because they are how I remember my childhood and how my parents record our family’s memorable moments. I will always affectionately recall how my father would bring along a first-generation Pentax camera wherever he went and took photos of us in the 70s. The collection of these black & white photos of us and of my family are invaluable and is something I always cherish.”
